Buying Dog Shampoo by the Gallon: A Guide for Groomers

Petopia dog wash and pet supply station in a green park

Quick answer: Gallon-size dog shampoo makes sense when you bathe several dogs a week, such as in a grooming salon, mobile grooming van, rescue or multi-dog home. Buy a formula you already know suits the dogs you wash, follow the directions on the label (Petopia's gallon labels do not state a dilution ratio, so use them as directed rather than as a concentrate), store the jug sealed in a cool, dry place, and compare cost per milliliter rather than price per bottle.

Who gallon sizes are for

A 500 mL bottle is plenty for one family dog. It runs out fast when you wash a lot of coats. Gallon jugs suit:

  • Grooming salons and mobile groomers who go through shampoo every day.
  • Self-serve dog washes that refill dispensers.
  • Rescues, shelters and boarding kennels bathing many dogs.
  • Multi-dog homes, especially with large, long-coated or outdoor dogs.

If you bathe one small dog once a month, a 500 mL bottle is usually the simpler choice. Our guide on how often to bathe your dog can help you estimate how much you will use.

What Petopia offers in gallon size

Petopia Essentials sells shampoo and conditioner in 1 GAL (3.8 L) jugs, listed on our groomers and bulk gallon page. The labels say "Formulated to Professional Standards".

Product Size Labeled for Key ingredients (from the label) Store price
Oatmeal Shampoo 1 GAL 1 GAL (3.8 L) Dogs & cats Oat extract, glycerin, panthenol, tocopherol, calendula extract $85.00
Coat Enhancing Conditioner 1 GAL 1 GAL (3.8 L) Dogs & cats Squalane, olive oil, jojoba seed oil, hydrolyzed silk, hydrolyzed keratin $85.00

Prices are as listed in our store on October 26, 2026 and may change; check the product page for the current price. The oatmeal gallon has the same ingredient list as the 500 mL Oatmeal Dog Shampoo. The gallon conditioner's list adds cetrimonium chloride and fragrance compared with the 500 mL bottle.

Dilution: follow the label

Many professional shampoos are concentrates meant to be mixed with water, and their labels say so with a ratio. Petopia's gallon labels give no dilution ratio. The directions are the same as the 500 mL bottles:

  • Shampoo: "Wet coat thoroughly with warm water. Apply shampoo and massage into a rich lather. Rinse thoroughly. Repeat if desired."
  • Conditioner: "After shampooing, apply conditioner evenly to the coat. Massage gently and rinse thoroughly with warm water."

General rule for any brand: if the label gives a dilution ratio, use it; if it doesn't, use the product as directed and don't assume it's a concentrate. Diluting a product that isn't designed for it can leave you with a weak lather and more product used per dog, not less. If you have questions about a specific product, contact us.

How to work out cost per wash

Price per bottle is misleading when sizes differ. Compare price per milliliter, then multiply by how much you actually use per bath.

  1. Price per mL. Divide the price by the volume. At current store prices, the 500 mL Oatmeal Shampoo ($11.95) works out to about 2.4 cents per mL, and the 3.8 L gallon ($85.00) to about 2.2 cents per mL.
  2. Volume equivalence. One 3.8 L gallon holds the same as about 7.6 of the 500 mL bottles. At current prices, 7.6 bottles would cost about $90.80, compared with $85.00 for one gallon.
  3. Your amount per bath. This depends on the dog's size and coat, and whether you do a second lather. Measure what you use for a typical dog for a week, then multiply by the price per mL.

Shipping, any bulk pricing and refill bottles also affect your real cost, so include them. For bulk or groomer pricing, email us at info@petopiainnovations.com.

Storage and handling tips

  • Keep the cap closed between uses so the product isn't exposed to air, water splashes or debris.
  • Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sun, and away from heaters in vans or wash rooms.
  • Decant into smaller bottles with a clean pump or funnel. Use clean, dry bottles, and label each one with the product name and lot number from the jug.
  • Don't top up old bottles with fresh product. Empty, rinse and dry them first.
  • Keep out of reach of children, as the label says, and keep the original jug so you have the full directions and warnings.

Choosing the right formula for a busy bath station

Most groomers keep a small set of formulas rather than one for every situation:

  • A gentle everyday shampoo for most coats. The oatmeal formula is designed for dogs with sensitive or dry skin and is labeled for dogs and cats.
  • A rinse-out conditioner for longer coats that need softness and easier brushing.
  • Specialty 500 mL bottles for occasional jobs, such as Whitening Shampoo for light coats or Tearless Shampoo for puppies and gentle face-area washes.

Safety reminders from the label

"For external use on pets only. Avoid contact with eyes and ear canals. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water. Keep out of reach of children. Discontinue use if irritation develops." If a dog has a skin condition, follow the products and schedule the dog's veterinarian recommends.
